The official launch of the Eastmain-1-A and the work of diverting the Rupert River took place on January 11, 2007. This project, estimated at around $5 billion, will generate economic benefits valued at $532 million in the region, including $212 million for the James Bay territory. Hydro-Quebec forecasts that in the coming years, the equivalent of 27,000 people will work on this project and, at its height, more than 4,000 workers will be on site.
